Santa Fe Restaurant Week The Ranch House

ranch house santa fe

We get customers from Texas and other places who seem to like it, too. The pasta is made in-house and all ingredients are carefully sourced. That’s because Josh Baum—who owns The Ranch House with his wife, Ann Gordon—is a master at smoking meats, a skill he honed while working with his uncle, Steve Seikel, helping him open his second Steve’s Rib restaurant in Oklahoma City.

Visit our new sister restaurant featuring Italian cuisine!

“My uncle was doing barbecue and I saw his operation in Oklahoma City and it was intriguing to me,” Baum says. “The way they did the meats, the slow cooking of the meats and how, once you cooked it, it was ready—it was a whole different cuisine. I just had not had a lot of barbecue in Santa Fe and I thought if I could take barbecue and cater it more to Santa Fe tastes, it would be a fun challenge. People didn’t grow up with barbecue here, so we use oak, a milder flavored wood, and incorporate chile.

We are dedicated to using Local and Natural Beef whenever possible. We decided to feature Italian cuisine because let’s be honest, who doesn’t love Italian food?! We have chosen our favorite dishes from all over Italy... Consuming raw or undercooked meats, poultry, seafood, shellfish, or eggs may increase your risk of food-borne illness, especially if you have certain medical conditions. In 2005, Josh Baum and his wife, Ann Gordon, started a small restaurant to showcase Josh’s passion for smoked meats. Josh’s BBQ became a mainstay of Santa Fe, but after five years it outgrew its little spot on Zafarano Drive. So in December 2011, the couple expanded their vision and moved to a larger space. We use Texas brown oak to smoke our meats to perfection!

Locals and visitors alike flock to The Ranch House for Baum’s unique barbecue—signature dishes that include red chile honey glazed baby back ribs, green chile brisket and pork belly tacos with apple cider barbecue topped with green chile slaw. One of the most popular meals here is smoked prime rib with a choice of two sides, served only for Friday and Saturday dinners. For big appetites, there’s nothing like the Ranch House Platter, a feast of brisket, pork, baby back ribs and sausage, along with the famous green chile cornbread and two sides. Or try the “Grandpappi of Burgers,” the Ultimate Burger, piled high with Tillamook sharp cheddar, pulled pork, Hatch green chile, bacon, red chile honey glaze, crispy onions and green chile slaw. Regulars know to leave room for homemade dessert, as the bourbon vanilla crème brûlée, chocolate peanut butter mousse and other options offer a delightful end note to your meal.

For all of these reasons, The Ranch House is known as “Not Your Average Barbecue Joint,” but there’s more. Since opening in 2011 as a reincarnation of Josh’s BBQ (the wildly popular one-room eatery in a Cerrillos Road mall,), the restaurant has been an integral part of the Santa Fe community. The Ranch House hosts an annual Teacher Appreciation Day, when teachers eat for free, and participates in Angel’s Night Out, when a portion of dinner proceeds benefits Kitchen Angels, which feeds Santa Fe’s homebound. The result was The Ranch House, which serves up Josh’s signature specialties in a casually sophisticated setting.

Stage 5: Test—Try Your Solutions Out

Design thinking emphasizes empathy, collaboration and iterative learning to solve problems creatively. This approach allows developers to design solutions that are more closely aligned with users' evolving behaviors and preferences. Additionally, considering the Structural and Mental Models levels enable developers to identify and challenge assumptions about what users need or value, leading to more innovative and user-centric solutions. According to Wired magazine, Charlie Hill, chief technology officer of IBM Design, indicated that the adoption of a traditional design thinking process by large companies such as IBM may lead to breakdown. However, the company can use the process as guidelines to draw its own process characteristics based on the existing complex business. The first step in finding success with design thinking is to foster a culture of human-centered design within your team.

There’s much more, including full online courses we've developed on many topics related to design thinking and its applications. You might consider developing your communication, innovation, leadership, research, and management skills, as those are often listed alongside design thinking in job postings and professional profiles. If you want to learn design thinking, take an active role in your education. Start polls, problem-solving exercises, and debates with peers to get a taste of the process. It’s also important to seek out diverse viewpoints to prepare yourself for the business world. Design thinking is an extension of innovation that allows you to design solutions for end users with a single problem statement in mind.

What is the goal of the Design Thinking process?

Today companies and organizations across America have adapted the model. The Double Diamond diagram from the Design Council helps to visualize the divergent and convergent stages of the design thinking process, and highlights the different modes of thinking that designers use. The DeepDive™ technique was developed by IDEO as a way to rapidly immerse a group into a situation where they can effectively problem-solve and generate ideas. They expressed this variant of the design thinking process live on ABC Nightline back in the late ’90s. Instead of focusing on reaching a bigger audience, Airbnb’s founders used design thinking to determine why their existing audience wasn’t utilizing their services. They realized that rather than focusing on traditional business values, like scalability, they needed to simply put themselves in users’ shoes to solve business problems.

A mindset is a characteristic mental attitude that determines how one interprets and responds to situations. Design thinking mindsets are how individuals think, feel and express themselves during design thinking activities. It includes people’s expectations and orientations during a design project.

Five stages of Design Thinking

These will invite people to share their experiences and observations to help your team better understand the problem. Then, you can move on to some specific exercises for the empathy stage of the process. The goal of this stage is for your team to develop a user-centered vision of the core problem you need to solve. The idea is to challenge any assumptions or biases teams have, instead using their customer perspective as a guiding source. This is important because it aligns the team on what needs to be considered during the rest of the design thinking process. Design thinking is a solution-based framework, so the focus is on coming up with as many ideas and potential solutions as possible.

Enhancing Design Thinking With Systems Thinking

Organize all your observations and draw parallels across your users’ current experiences. These five stages identify the five modes that you would expect to carry out in a design project to solve any innovative problem. Every project has to go with the activities specified to the product under development, but each stage's essence remains the same. Here, we'll explain the Design Thinking Model and why it's so crucial. As we all know, it's a philosophy dedicated to finding creative solutions that put the needs of the end-user first. Let's learn more about Design Thinking by digging further into this article.

In design thinking, cross-functional teams work together to understand user needs and create solutions that address those needs. Moreover, the design thinking process helps unearth creative solutions. Design thinking is an iterative, non-linear process which focuses on a collaboration between designers and users. It brings innovative solutions to life based on how real users think, feel and behave.

In addition to helping him refine and adjust the structure, Bland also used it to gather feedback from early readers and target audiences, which helped get the final product just right. While often used in product design, service design, and customer experience, you can use design thinking in virtually any situation, industry, or organization to create user-centric solutions to specific problems. The fifth step in the design thinking process will see you testing your prototypes on real or representative users. Design thinking is an extremely hands-on approach to problem-solving favoring action over discussion. Instead of hypothesizing about what your users want, design thinking encourages you to get out there and engage with them face-to-face.

As consumers, companies, and regulators shift toward increased sustainability, design processes are coming under even more scrutiny. The challenge is that carbon-efficient production processes tend to be more complex and can require more carbon-intensive materials. Central to the design thinking process is prototyping and testing (more on that later) which allows designers to try, to fail, and to learn what works. Testing also involves customers, and that continued involvement provides essential user feedback on potential designs and use cases. If the MIT-Altitude team studying walkers had ended user involvement after its initial interviews, it would likely have ended up with a walker that didn’t work very well for customers. The Last stage of design thinking is - Test, where the designers test the product with the best solutions identified in the prototyping stage.

One of the innovations that came from their immersive research is the driver app, which focuses on delivery partners’ pain points around parking in highly populated urban areas. To address this, the driver app provides step-by-step directions from restaurant to customer to ensure smoother delivery processes. To empathize with customers, the founders spent time traveling to each location, imagining what users look for in a temporary place to stay. Invest in a high-quality camera and take pictures of what customers want to see, based on their travel observations. For example, showing every room rather than a select few, listing special features like a hot tub or pool in the description, and highlighting the neighborhood or areas in close proximity to the residence.

One such iteration focuses on the social innovation setting in developing countries. For this context, the terminology needs to be simplified, made memorable and restructured for the typical challenges faced in those environments. The Human-Centered Design (HCD) Toolkit they developed for this purpose was re-interpreted as an acronym to mean hear, create and deliver. Let’s now take a quick look at 10 popular frameworks to further understand this innovative and revolutionary process. While we know a lot about practices that stimulate new ideas, innovation teams often struggle to apply them.

It involves identifying the problem statement to come up with the best outcome. This is done through observation and taking the time to determine the problem and the roadblocks that prevented a solution in the past. Design thinking is different from other innovation and ideation processes in that it’s solution-based and user-centric rather than problem-based. This means it focuses on the solution to a problem instead of the problem itself. D4VG products can cost more to build, but they can ultimately raise margins by delivering on a clear understanding of a product’s core brand attributes, insights into people’s motivations, and design thinking.

“After several iterations, we might get something that works, we validate it with real customers, and we often find that what we thought was a great solution is actually only just OK. But then we can make it a lot better through even just a few more iterations,” Eppinger said. An interdisciplinary program that combines engineering, management, and design, leading to a master’s degree in engineering and management. Learn more about design thinking in the full-day course Generating Big Ideas with Design Thinking.

The design thinking process outlines a series of steps that bring this ideology to life—starting with building empathy for the user, right through to coming up with ideas and turning them into prototypes. The ideology behind design thinking states that, in order to come up with innovative solutions, one must adopt a designer’s mindset and approach the problem from the user’s perspective. At the same time, design thinking is all about getting hands-on; the aim is to turn your ideas into tangible, testable products or processes as quickly as possible. Design thinking methods and strategies belong at every level of the design process.

Pho Pasteur is also known for their bun bo hue, a beef soup with rice noodles thicker and rounder than pho. It gets crowded in here, but there’s a service bell attached to each table to help expedite the entire process. If you are no stranger to the slurp, then Phở 79 is likely already on your circuit. It makes sense that pho took off for the Korean community, says Daniel Kim, whose family has owned produce purveyors and sushi restaurants in Koreatown since he was a child. “Seolleongtang and soups are things we have in our daily diet that we understand. Pho had condiments and vegetables that we’re used to,” says Kim. “But it was also unique for us, with cilantro and basil. The broth at Viet Huong in South El Monte is bursting with flavor.

Pho’s proliferation meant the comforting, affordable dish became a favorite for other crowds. Grandparents would go with their kids on Sundays after church; college students would visit with their families during school breaks. Pho 24 owner Connie Park aims to keep her broth simple. “My style is Koreatown style, not Vietnam style. The Pho 24 pho is less salty and more onion-forward — Park is quick to emphasize that her broth uses only sea salt and no MSG. Her top seller is a spicy oyster soup geared toward Korean palates.

Southern pho is the more common one, with an abundant use of spices and flavorings (fish sauce, hoisin, etc.) and versatile cuts of meat like tripe and brisket. Northern pho is much more simplistic - the noodles are flatter and wider, and the focus is on its pure beef broth. The main ingredients are rice noodles and thinly sliced raw beef. Bobaholic Tea House offers up bubble tea, snacks, and pho in south Fargo

House of Pho takes pride in offering our guests a unique dining experience. Pho has been around for a century and is indisputably the national dish of Vietnam. A good pho takes hours to make; beef bones and parts are simmered under low heat to obtain a rich, complex flavor.

Once seated, peruse the extensive menu, which runs the gamut from egg noodle soups and goi cuon, to appetizers and desserts along with many varieties of the eponymous dish. You'll never go wrong with oxtail—it's the most popular with good reason. With Pho as our specialty noodle soup, we keep it as our most authentic dish that we have to offer, with only a few tweaks from our own family recipe added to the mix.. Korean restaurants tend to mirror each other quickly when their operators spot a hot new business trend, and within any close-knit community, competition will quickly arise over who has “the best” version of a given dish.

We focus our menu to showcase traditional herbs and spices, incorporating the essence of rich bold flavor into our bone broth noodle soups. The enduring popularity of pho restaurants in Koreatown, whether the 24-hour model or shops with Korean influences, suggests that steaming soup bowls continue to resonate in the neighborhood, no matter the form. At Seoul Pho, located on the rooftop food court of California Market, the pho comes with the option of a large beef rib, the broth heavy on garlic, and supplemented with notes of sweetness from a side of pickled red onions. These flavors resonate with the Korean palate, which appreciates heady garlic and sweet, pickled items, and the big beef bone swimming in broth is familiar to those who grew up eating galbitang.

With so many great Korean soups, and even other Asian specialties like ramen or Taiwanese beef noodle soup favored across the city, pho has remained a beloved dish in Koreatown. But there may be another reason for its staying power. “Knowing Korean business owners, it’s simple,” says Kim. “It’s not hard to put some beef bones in some water. That’s easy to execute.” The dish’s affordability, compounded with its similarities to Korean soups, made it a no-brainer business model for the community.

Sliced squash, cabbage, shrimp, and mushrooms are first tossed in a wok. The broth, which uses the same beef base as the standard pho dishes, is mixed with four types of chiles, giving the soup a red tint. Mussels and oysters swirl atop a pile of rice noodles. The finished product is an umami-rich seafood stew with a healthy kick, a sort of jjampong overlaid on pho, a dish that could only be found in Koreatown.

The ingredient-to-soup ratio is idyllic; they’re very generous with their raw beef and thinly sliced onions. The pho dac biet is highly recommended - “dac biet” means “combo with everything.” The small will cost you $7.95 and comes with a hefty ensemble of rare beef, well-done brisket, flank, tendon, and tripe. The whole bowl is flavorful enough already, but you can ask for a side of their beef oil to take it up another notch. This place is a chicken specialist, so sticking to poultry is suggested - the pho ga (chicken pho) is a standout.

With two locations in the San Fernando Valley, Pho 999 is one of the few places in the 818 to get your pho fix. The Van Nuys location is right next to the 99 Ranch market. Admittedly, the soup isn’t as fantastic as the selections in the San Gabriel Valley and Orange County, but it works well for the price point.

The chicken is leaner than conventional types, and it’s served on the side with an addicting garlic and ginger dipping sauce. If you’re ordering for two, try throwing in the Hainan chicken for good measure. The menu at Bobaholic includes several types of crafted teas, including milk and supreme milk teas (using oat milk or organic whole milk), and teas made with tiger sugar (a sweet, caramelized brown sugar).

House of Pho takes pride in offering our guests a unique dining experience. Pho has been around for a century and is indisputably the national dish of Vietnam. A good pho takes hours to make; beef bones and parts are simmered under low heat to obtain a rich, complex flavor.

House of Pho offers authentic Vietnamese cuisine in a modern restaurant setting. Our dishes are created from family recipes, infusing traditional herbs and spices and quality ingredients to build the rich and bold flavors of our bone broth noodle "pho" soups. It takes a great amount of care to achieve the sweet but savory taste of the bone broth and maintain the aromatics of the earthy tones of the spices. The menu is complemented by the influences of the North.

Here are some of the best places to get your pho fix in Los Angeles.

But within the confines of Koreatown, Vietnamese pho has experienced exceeding popularity since the early ’90s. Why Vietnam’s national dish, and why in Koreatown? It turns out that steaming bowls of beef broth and chewy rice noodles serve as panaceas for late-night hangovers while also working as quick, satisfying, and reasonably priced family meals.

Opened in the early 80s, it's widely considered to ladle some of the best and most praiseworthy pho in southern California. The simple interior is enlivened by a bright yellow wall adorned with numerous accolades. It's spartan but clean, and you're here for the pho, not the fashion show. Place your name on the clipboard by the front door and expect a wait.

Design Guides American Institute of Steel Construction

steel design

The fundamental process of structural design commences with the preparation of a structural concept, which is itself based on an architectural design for the structure. For simple, common forms of structure, it will be possible to prepare a concept design directly from the architectural design - typical solutions are well understood. The American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), Inc. publishes the Steel Construction Manual (Steel construction manual, or SCM), which is currently in its 16th edition.

Steel Structure Design Principles: A Comprehensive Guide

There is a variety of different static systems that the structural engineer can choose from, and often the beams act together with columns as frames. Before we dive into the nerdy calculations, it’s good to get an overview of the steps that need to be taken to design a steel beam – in this case, a simply supported beam loaded with a point load. Metals at high temperature react chemically with oxygen and nitrogen in air to form harmful oxides and nitrides. Arc welding processes must provide a means to cover the arc and the molten metal with gas, vapor, or slag to prevent contact of molten metal with air. Welding is the application of heat or pressure to produce a localized coalescence of materials and a suitable bond, with or without filler metals. Welding produces a molecular bond of materials, not a mechanical connection such as bolts.

It serves the same purpose as the AISC manual, but conforms with Canadian standards. Subsequent live sessions will cover tension member design, compression members, bending members, and combined axial forces and bending. Every year, talented engineering students from around the world come together to conceptualize, analyze, fabricate, test, assemble, and ultimately compete to design award-winning steel bridges. Each year the competition rules change – after all, no two real-world bridge projects are the same – meaning there’s no “one size fits all” solution for each design. In other words, one success in one competition doesn’t guarantee success in another, since each use case is unique. AISC's new Design Guide 39 is your one-stop shop for design procedures for end-plate moment connections!

0  Detailing and Fabricating Steel for Building Structures

Bearing type connections require snug-tight bolts, tightened by a few bursts from an impact wrench or the full effort of ironworkers with spud wrenchs. Slip-critical type connections require tensioning the bolt to a minimum value based on bolt diameter and type. The raising crew installs column base plates using shim packs and leveling nuts, verifies their position and grouts them in place. The crew then attaches slings and erects columns, followed by headers and beams. The major criterion to select equipment for steel erection is the lifting requirement determined by extreme load and reach. Mobile cranes are typically used for steel erection up to 14 stories. The design for larger columns may include leveling nuts on each anchor bolt.

Physical Testing in a Digital Environment

In all cases, the additional fabrication costs make trusses more expensive than conventional beam and column structures. The design of long-span steel and (steel-concrete) composite beams is generally carried out in accordance with BS 5950[4], BS EN 1993[13] or BS EN 1994[12]. For some types of beam this codified guidance is complemented by specific design guidance, such as that on the design of beams with large web openings, or manufacturers' software. For 'simple construction', frame analysis will not be necessary at the Ultimate Limit State (ULS), as the members can be designed in isolation. It may be necessary (or convenient) to use analysis software to determine the lateral deflections at the Serviceability Limit State (SLS) and when assessing frame stability.

BCSA also published a Model specification is for the purchase of reclaimed steel sections in March 2022, to be used in conjunction with NSSS Annex J – Sustainability Specification. Steel structure load is the external force and other factors that cause internal pressure and deformation of the structure or component. Or various direct effects exerted on the steel structure building to produce the impact on the system or parts. Common ones include structural self-weight, floor live load, roof live load, roof area dust load, vehicle load, crane load, equipment dynamic load, and Wind, snow, ice, waves, and other natural loads.

Self-shielded electrodes provide full shielding from protective gases and slag. The size, thickness, and position of the weld are important criteria for selection of the specific welding process. Fast fill joints require a large volume and high rate of deposition of weld metal. Fast freeze joints are out of position (such as vertical or overhead) and therefore require rapid solidification of the molten metal.

Steel Buildings That Are Incredible Examples of Modern Architecture

In this process the electrode rod provides its own shielding and is quickly consumed. The covering for “stick” electrodes in certain arc welding processes, under the heat of the arc, generates a gaseous shield. Other welding processes use a shielding gas supplied to the point of welding. Shielding is required during the welding process to prevent high temperature metals from reacting with oxygen and nitrogen.

The cross-sectional shape is one of the essential factors affecting the stability coefficient. According to the stability theory, the stability coefficient of a beam is related to its cross-sectional moment of inertia. In steel structures, common cross-sectional shapes include rectangles, circles, T-shape, H-shape, and tubular shapes.

Bearing type bolted connections (also termed shear connections) initially resist forces by friction, then bolt shear, then bearing, then tension on the net bolt section. The slip critical type (friction) connection uses bolt tension to produce a clamping force and friction at the slip face. This slip critical type is used in joints that are subject to fatigue load and in joints that use slotted holes.
